Even with Ryan upstate, @timotree and I ran WikiTrails in its normal Tuesday time slot. We used the “random article” button to generate our start points, and we took turns choosing our end points. We had a full half hour scheduled, and I expected to get one or two rounds in before GeoGuesser time.
We got to play four rounds!!!!!
Our first random start click sent us to the page “1952 NSWRFL Season.” That’s the New South Wales Rugby Football League season, as we read. Our goal was Skaro, the home planet of the Daleks from Doctor Who. Ten minutes and six clicks later (through rugby, Britain, and popular British television shows), we landed on Skaro.
Our next random start click sent us to another sports page: “1998 Japan Open Tennis Women’s Doubles.” Our goal was kombucha. Five minutes and four clicks later (from Japanese food through fermentation), we were wondering at our luck and how easily we were racing through these.
It happened again on our third round that our random start presented exactly the country we needed listed to get to our goal. It was not a sports event this time, but a television show: Provaci Ancora Prof, from Italy. Our goal? Bolognese sauce. It took three clicks.
Finally, on our fourth try we got a challenge. We were aiming for khachapuri, a Georgian cheese bread. The random article generator presented us with an option between Wichita, Texas and Wichita, Kansas. We chose Kansas. Fortunately, the article that popped up included a link to time zones, which made it easy enough to hop hemispheres. It took us six clicks to reach our goal. That one took us about fifteen minutes, and we were finally satisfied enough to call it quits.
It’s really amazing how easy it is to go from one random article to a target.
